Spotlight on KCLMS teacher and alum Elliot Francis-Hewett

What made you want to attend King’s Maths School as a prospective student?

"The idea of going to a specialist maths school seemed interesting and different. During the admissions process, one thing that stood out for me was the interview. I really enjoyed the conversation and thought I would be happy to spend a couple of years in such a warm and dynamic environment."

Tell us more about your experience of attending KCLMS?

"Before studying at KCLMS I knew I was good at Maths, but I didn't appreciate that it was my favourite subject. One of the best things about studying at KCLMS was the opportunity to really get to know the subject well enough that now I just love it. In fact, so much so that I ended up studying it at university and basing my career on it."

What was the teaching like at King's Maths School?

"The teaching was incredible. I got to watch teachers who don't just teach because it's their job but also because talking about Maths and being excited about it is in their blood. It was really encouraging for me to have my love of the subject develop alongside the enthusiasm of the teachers."

What’s your favourite memory?

"Playing Only Connect in the hall and winning a tie break.

KLCMS is such a friendly and caring school. There were always lots of games and fun activities happening."

What advice would you give to prospective students considering applying?

"Come to a taster day and speak to current students or alumni. They’ll be able to give you an accurate picture of their time at KCLMS. If what you hear sounds exciting and interesting come and check it out further."

Why did you go into teaching?

"I know there are a lot of people who dislike studying maths or are indifferent to it. If I can help make this necessary part of their school experience more enjoyable, then I can go home at the end of the day happy.

Obviously teaching at KCLMS is different as it’s a place where maths truly thrives. Equally to helping people who don’t like maths, I also really enjoy working in a school where everyone is so stimulated and excited by the subject."

What’s it like to work at KCLMS?

"Not too different from being a student: there are lots of mathematical and scientific discussions going on at lunch, for instance. Everyone is really enthusiastic about what they do and is just trying to enjoy doing their subject as much as possible."

What’s your favourite aspect of your job?

"When a student understands or appreciates something that previously seemed insurmountable or insignificant, it gives me great joy."

What did you do after leaving KCLMS?

"I studied Maths at Bristol University. After graduating, I taught Maths at a high school. I then joined KCLMS and have never looked back."

Describe KCLMS in one word.

"Unique".
