Marcus
In your own words, what is King’s Maths School?
It’s a place where I can study maths with likeminded people, who want to learn at a high level in the same way I do.
What is exciting about King’s Maths School?
I like the fact that it’s created and tailored specifically for people who want to teach and learn mathematics.
What do you enjoy about learning here?
Our teachers offer extra courses for students who want to, for example, go into engineering, so you can tailor your A Levels to your needs.
What is your favourite subject to study? Why?
Mechanics. I like the way it is more applicable than some of the other math topics. I like how logical it is and it makes sense to me.
What have the problem solving sessions been like?
The representative from King’s taught us new ways of approaching problems. They are not the same as our teachers, so they don’t teach us the same as in classes. There is a small group of us, so they can take our cases one by one and help us with what we have problems with.
It’s been good to meet and work with people who have been or are still studying maths at university, and find out their experiences and opinions of academia.
Tell me about the sports / exercise you have done at King’s Maths School?
I play football, and I really enjoy that as we can relax and have a good exercise session at the same time. People can’t always fit in exercise whilst studying for their A Levels, so it’s good to have that opportunity.
What are the teachers like?
I like the teachers because they are all from top universities. They understand what it’s like to be aiming high and so can help us meet our own ambitions.
Do you attend any clubs or societies?
Astronomy club, which was set up by a student at the school, and I did drama too. Drama was quite a small group, so we would make it very personal.
Has the school been helpful to you in the UCAS process?
We had a couple of days dedicated to setting up our UCAS accounts last term. Not everyone has siblings or people close to them outside of school who have been through the process before, so it was nice to be given time to be introduced to the system and begin preparing for the work ahead.
There was a lot of empathises on what to include in our personal statements. You don’t get a lot of space to write, so it’s good to know exactly what universities are looking for when looking at your application.
What subject do you want to study at university?
A broad based engineering course. Engineering was something I was already looking to go into, and the maths school helped me decide that I am looking for something a little more open than, for example, mechanics.
What career do you want to go into?
I’m not sure. I’ll probably go into an engineering career of some kind.
