In your own words, what is King’s Maths School?
King’s Maths School is a specialist school for like-minded individuals, individuals who are excited and passionate about maths and are good at it too. It’s a place for us all to work together to produce great results and great futures in maths.
You attended our GCSE Enrichment Programme last year. Did participating in this course make you feel King’s Maths School was the right place for you?
Definitely. We were so affiliated with the school, we knew all the teachers and the building so well! We had been here so many times that it just felt normal for us to apply and come here. It felt like we were coming back to our second school.
What is exciting about King’s Maths School?
When you are in a place with loads of top mathematicians, it’s a challenge and it pushes you. It makes you more passionate about maths, especially as you are surrounded by people who share your passion. It’s exciting to be in an environment where people push each other to really excel to do well.
As a new student, what at King’s Maths School are you looking forward to?
Achieving good grades!
I’m looking forward to Computer Science because there are a lot of programmers here and they are all really good. I’m excited for the mathematicians here to bring a new, exciting element of maths into Computer Science.
What are the teachers like?
They are very open and they seem really excited and passionate about maths. They’ve done research in their field, so they are not just teachers but researchers too! That is very exciting as they offer us new ideas, making classes more engaging.
What subject do you want to study at university?
I like the Maths and Philosophy degree at Oxford, or just Maths. It’s important that the school doesn’t just teach the curriculum, but gives you extra knowledge on topics you generally may never come across at this stage in our education. We had a lecture on Apollonian Circles, and that was in our first week at the school! I think our teachers give us this outside knowledge to feed our passion, so that when we go for our university interviews, the interviewer will see that we really love our subject.
What career do you want to go into?
I’m thinking of going into the finance industry, or maybe teaching so I can do more research in maths, as I really enjoy pure maths and theoretical side of the topic too. Once again, King’s Maths School just makes you so passionate about maths that you want to study and learn more all the time! The school also gives you a really good idea of the different fields in maths you can pursue, which will help me solidify the job and career I want to go into.
